Treating a change as a hypothesis, not a commitment
Most attempts to change a drinking or drug use pattern begin with a commitment. I'm going to cut back. I'm going to stop for a month. I'm going to have no more than three drinks when I go out. The commitment is the starting point, and the success or failure of the attempt is measured against the commitment.
This framing creates a specific problem: any deviation from the commitment is experienced as failure. Failure is experienced as evidence about character. Evidence about character produces shame. Shame produces avoidance. Avoidance produces return to the previous pattern.
Behavioural experiments start somewhere different.
What a behavioural experiment is
In CBT, a behavioural experiment is a structured, time-limited test of a specific hypothesis. The hypothesis is not "I will change my behaviour." It's "I wonder what would happen if I changed this specific aspect of my behaviour, in this specific context, for this specific period."
The distinction sounds subtle. It isn't. A commitment is a promise about yourself, about who you are and what you will do. A hypothesis is a question about the world, about what happens when you try something different. Promises can be broken. Hypotheses can be tested.
When you run a behavioural experiment rather than making a commitment, the result is always information rather than verdict. Whether the experiment produces the expected outcome or a different one, you've learned something real about your pattern. There's no failure, only data.
Designing a useful experiment
A good behavioural experiment has four components.
A specific, testable hypothesis. Not "I want to drink less" (a wish) but "I think that if I don't have alcohol in the house during the week, my weeknight use will decrease" (a specific prediction about a specific intervention). The more specific the hypothesis, the more the data can actually test it.
A defined time period. Two weeks is usually the minimum to see a meaningful pattern. Four weeks is better. "I'll try this for a month" gives the data enough time to show something real.
A pre-specified measure of what success looks like, and what doesn't. If the hypothesis is about weeknight use, define what counts as lower: fewer drinking occasions, lower units per occasion, both? Decide in advance what the data would need to show for the experiment to have worked.

Examples of useful experiments
"I wonder what would happen to my sleep quality if I didn't drink after 9pm for two weeks." The hypothesis is specific (no drinking after 9pm), the measure is defined (sleep quality scores in the app), the time period is set (two weeks). At the end of the two weeks, the data either shows an improvement in sleep scores on the relevant nights or it doesn't. Either result is informative.
"I wonder whether my Friday evening urge intensity decreases if I exercise on Friday afternoon." This is a more complex hypothesis, testing a specific intervention against a specific outcome. The urge log provides the measure. The data tests the prediction.
"I wonder what the financial picture looks like if I track every drink for a month." This is a hypothesis about what accurate tracking reveals, rather than about changing the behaviour itself. The experiment is the act of logging accurately; the outcome is the spend estimate at the end of the month.
What to do when the experiment doesn't work
The commitment frame produces a specific response to not achieving the target: shame and abandonment. "I tried to cut back and I failed, which proves I can't."
The experiment frame produces a different response: the hypothesis was not confirmed. That's useful information. What does it tell you?
If the hypothesis was "not having alcohol at home will reduce my weeknight drinking" and you found yourself buying alcohol on the way home from work, the experiment has told you something important: the at-home availability wasn't the limiting factor, something else is. What was the trigger for stopping at the bottle shop? What was the emotional state? This information points toward a different hypothesis to test next.
The experiment that doesn't work isn't a failure. It's the most informative kind of data. It tells you that you were wrong about which variable was doing the work, and that's genuinely useful for designing the next experiment more precisely.
The cumulative effect
A series of behavioural experiments, run with genuine curiosity and recorded accurately, produces something that a series of failed commitments doesn't: a growing, specific understanding of how your pattern actually works.
You learn which hypotheses were correct. You learn which interventions produce the predicted effects and which don't. You learn which variables matter in your situation and which don't matter as much as you assumed. You build, gradually, an accurate model of your own behaviour, which is the foundation for any genuine and lasting change.
The commitment frame treats change as a binary: you either kept the commitment or you didn't. The experiment frame treats change as an empirical process: you're learning what works, one testable hypothesis at a time.
The data is the instrument. The experiment is the method. The curiosity is the only requirement.
